ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS FOR

  • Acupuncture has been widely used for pain relief in Asia throughout history. The treatment involves inserting very fine needles into specific acupoints on the skin to stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin in the body and brain, thereby alleviating pain. Acupuncture is not only used for temporary pain relief but is also considered an effective method for managing chronic pain.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), acupuncture has shown significant effects in treating long-term pain. By undergoing regular acupuncture sessions, many patients have been able to reduce their dependence on pain medications. Studies have confirmed that acupuncture is particularly effective in relieving back pain, shoulder pain, and knee pain. It can help reduce the severity and frequency of pain episodes. The NIH concluded that "acupuncture is therefore a reasonable option for patients with chronic pain.

  • Digestive issues are very common in the United States. According to statistics, as many as 60 to 70 million Americans suffer from digestive diseases. Problems such as acid reflux, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea all indicate issues with the digestive system. The underlying causes may include chronic stress, poor diet and lifestyle habits, or even inadequate sleep patterns.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history in China and has now gained popularity worldwide. Acupuncture, one of the treatments in TCM, helps regulate the flow of energy throughout the body by stimulating various acupoints. Since the human body is an interconnected system, digestive problems can have a profound impact on overall health. Acupuncture treatment for digestive issues not only improves physical health but can also positively affect emotional and mental well-being.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is renowned for its holistic approach to treating a wide range of diseases, and gynecological disorders are no exception. According to TCM theory, many internal organs are directly or indirectly connected to the reproductive system. For example, menstrual irregularities are often related to dysfunctions in the heart, lungs, kidneys, or spleen. By stimulating specific acupuncture points corresponding to these various conditions, acupuncture can address issues such as blood stasis and hormonal imbalances, helping the reproductive organs restore normal function.

  • Many studies have found that acupuncture is highly effective in treating depression and anxiety. Acupuncture uses fine needles to penetrate blocked areas in the body, regulating congested or imbalanced energy, which in turn affects our mental state.

Research also shows that acupuncture significantly reduces symptoms of depression, and its effects are not merely due to the placebo effect.

An article published in the journal Medical Acupuncture indicates that six studies provide substantial evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating depression and anxiety. By promoting blood circulation, acupuncture can also stimulate the immune system and trigger the release of endorphins.

How Does Acupuncture Help with Weight Loss?

According to traditional acupuncture theory, simple obesity is often related to blockages caused by excessive dampness and phlegm. By selecting specific acupuncture points based on diagnosis, acupuncture can strengthen the spleen and stomach, clear the intestines, eliminate phlegm, and reduce excess fat. From the perspective of modern medicine, acupuncture activates the central nervous system, regulates lipid metabolism and hormone levels, adjusts the endocrine, digestive, and urinary systems, and balances energy metabolism, resulting in weight loss. Clinical observations have shown that acupuncture can delay gastric emptying, suppress appetite, and prevent overeating. It also improves bowel function and helps those with chronic gastrointestinal diseases by enhancing digestive function.

Common Methods of Acupuncture for Weight Loss

    1. Traditional Body Acupuncture, Electroacupuncture, and Moxibustion

Based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis and meridian theory, specific acupuncture points are selected according to the individual's condition. Suitable tonification and reduction techniques are used, and electroacupuncture is applied to enhance the stimulation. For patients with deficiency or cold syndromes, moxibustion is often combined to balance yin and yang, improving body constitution and achieving weight loss. Treatment is typically 1-3 times per week, with each session lasting about 30 minutes. A course of treatment consists of 10-15 sessions.

    2. Thread Embedding Therapy

Thread embedding is an extension of traditional acupuncture. This method involves inserting absorbable medical threads into specific acupuncture points, where they provide continuous stimulation. This method is most effective for simple obesity but is not recommended for the elderly, those with weak constitutions, people prone to allergies, or those with keloid scarring. The treatment is typically done once every two weeks (allowing time for the thread to be absorbed), with five sessions constituting one treatment course.

    3. Auricular Acupuncture

Acupuncture points on the ear, such as the stomach, spleen, triple burner, hunger point, thirst point, subcortex, and endocrine points, are selected. 3-5 points are chosen each session, with shallow needling and moderate stimulation for about 30 minutes. Sessions are conducted daily or every other day. Alternatively, needle embedding or pressing methods are used, and patients are instructed to press the points themselves before meals or when feeling hungry to enhance stimulation. The time for needle retention and replacement varies depending on the season.

Who is Suitable for Acupuncture Weight Loss?

The best results are seen in cases of simple obesity, which is caused by factors such as overeating, lack of exercise, or genetics, leading to fat accumulation. Most people fall into this category. Secondary obesity, caused by neurological or endocrine disorders, medications, etc., should primarily focus on treating the underlying condition.

Among cases of simple obesity, the most significant results are seen in acquired obesity—those who were not overweight as children but gained weight after adolescence. These individuals tend to have enlarged fat cells without an increase in their number. In contrast, constitutional obesity, linked to genetics and overnutrition from childhood, involves both enlarged and increased fat cells. Individuals who are merely overweight (BMI below 25) or have hereditary obesity without obvious clinical symptoms are generally considered in a normal physical state, not a pathological one, so acupuncture for weight loss may not meet expectations.

To summarize, the ideal candidates for acupuncture weight loss are those who were not overweight as children, now have a BMI over 25, have uneven fat distribution, and have soft muscles, especially abdominal fat.

Will Weight Rebound After Acupuncture Treatment?

First, it’s important to understand that any weight loss method requires a balance of diet and exercise. Whether or not weight rebounds largely depends on post-treatment habits.

Clinical observations show that if patients follow a scientific diet plan during acupuncture treatment, they gradually develop healthy eating habits. As the treatment progresses, these habits become ingrained, and once the target weight or a certain reduction is achieved, if caloric intake and expenditure remain balanced, weight will not rebound.

Rebound often occurs when patients pursue rapid weight loss during acupuncture treatment by extreme dieting or taking laxatives. This leads to fat reduction accompanied by water loss. After treatment, once normal eating resumes and water is replenished, the weight quickly returns. Additionally, some patients blindly follow unsuitable diet plans, such as only consuming pure protein foods and a small amount of oil-free vegetables without carbohydrates. This unbalanced and undernourishing diet is hard to maintain long-term, leading to compensatory overeating after treatment, causing weight to return or even exceed the pre-treatment level. Another often overlooked cause of weight rebound is untreated psychological conditions in some obese patients, such as excessive anxiety, tension, or eating disorders like anorexia or binge eating.

 FAQs

  • Acupuncture is used to promote the body’s remarkable self-healing abilities. An acupuncture treatment involves the insertion and manipulation of flexible, hair-thin needles at specific points on the body, utilizing the nervous system network along the fascial plane, where your energy resides.

Acupuncture allows the body to return to its natural state of balance and harmony.

Many patients find the sensations produced by acupuncture treatment to be a deeply relaxing, meditative experience both mentally and physically, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.

  • Acupuncture has been studied, further developed and ceaselessly researched while being used to effectively treat and prevent conditions for thousands of years.

The initial discovery of acupuncture took place in East Asia, where illnesses are treated in a holistic manner that considers the impact of mental and emotional stress. Based on this holistic approach, we examine illness from the perspective that stress causes disharmony and eventually imbalance, which disrupts a person’s ability to effectively deal with stress. Over time, this weakens their ability to prevent and heal from illness, as we are all designed to naturally do.

Acupuncture is only one method of treatment that exists within a wide scope of practices beneath the ancient system of East Asian medicine.

  • When it comes to our health, even though many of us are aware of our basic biology, most of us don’t think much about the parts of ourselves we don’t see—our emotions, energy levels, thoughts and even our cells are, for the most part, invisible to us during our day-to-day lives, yet we would never deny their existence.

Our energy, similar to the blood in our vessels, travels along a specific pathway called a channel, or meridian. This energy, though it moves along this channel without us perceiving it most of the time, can be experienced during an acupuncture session.

  • Using very fine, hair-thin and single-use surgical, stainless steel needles on specific points along the body, we are able to restore that balance and correct the disharmony.

The needles, once inserted, act as conductors for this micro-current, re-establishing the connection required to keep harmony and balance to our circulatory, nervous, endocrine and organ systems. This restores the body and promotes our natural ability to heal ourselves. With acupuncture, we can effectively prevent illness before it happens.

The acupuncture points chosen will depend on your condition, but you can expect five to 20 needles. Once the needles are inserted and you begin to feel relaxed, you will be able to lie comfortably with the needles in place. Your practitioner will come check on you during your session and this will be done quietly as to not disturb you.

While resting with the needles, your body relaxes over the warmth of a BioMat, which empowers the circulatory system to increase and improve movement of blood, lymph and nutrients through the body.

The needles used during acupuncture are different from any other type of medical instrument. They are fine and flexible and are usually inserted without any initial sensation.

Once your energy is successfully conducted by the insertion of the needle, people report experiencing a sense of heaviness, numbness or electric stimulation at the needle site, or along the accompanying portion of the acupuncture channel being stimulated. Because these sensations are new, they can cause mild discomfort at first, still patients often find the treatments to be quite relaxing.

  • The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative and occur exponentially, so more then one treatment is necessary. For acute, or short-term conditions, you can expect to have four to 10 treatments, but you will usually begin to feel relief after your first session.

Chronic conditions may take longer to respond to treatment, depending on the type, severity and duration of the condition. Preventative treatments and those for general well-being may also be scheduled on an as-needed basis.

Our goal at Be Well Holistic Care is exactly the same as your goal. We want you to feel better as soon as possible. Your body will inform us of how often treatment is needed, and will set the pace for your maintenance.
